Sad to see a skating rink close, but the activity keeps rolling on for those, like me, who dig it. Your writing is impeccable, and your attention to human stories within the built environment is one of the things "the Lord giveth." Thanks!
First French restaurant I ever ate at. My Grandparents took me there in 1966. I was six. I have eaten there countless times since but last time was just before the Pandemic. I vowed to go back once I saw the gas line nonsense was finally over but, alas, I will be unable to. It’s warmth will be missed on a chilly NY winter’s night.
Hopefully I can snag a matchbook or souvenir! I wonder if I have one in my matchbook basket -- hundreds of matchbooks and business cards are in there from my adventures dating back to the 1990s!
Exactly! It was such an icon of trips in and out of Newark. I really wonder why this sign could not have been left in place. Seems absurd to send it out to St. Louis. The cost of taking it down, moving it, and reinstalling it was probably more than leaving it in place. It requires a patchwork of government, preservation groups and business to come together and think imaginatively -- and we all know that rarely happens!
Chez Napoleon was a favorite among CBS News producers, correspondents back in early '70s, when I worked there as an assistant. CBS News was way way west on 57th Street, near 11th Avenue, and Napoleon was the closest and only good restaurant in the area. However, it was expensive, and the lower-paid staff at CBS couldn't afford it for lunch!

Thank you Tom for these most kind words! I will "taketh" them with joy! :)

Well said! I'm so sad you will miss a farewell visit but those memories will warm us all.
Somewhere there was a cobalt blue ash tray with the logo in my grandparents’ house - sadly lost to time.
Wow!
Delighted to see you're from the Sleepy Hollow area - you have a fan here (Ohio transplant)!
Yeah! Oh, and I love Ohio!
That's a shame about Chez Napoléon. It was one of the first French restaurants I was ever taken too. I still have a matchbook from them.
Also a shame about the Newark Budweiser sign. Now how will I know that I'm approaching the airport?

What a GREAT story! Thanks for sharing it. If those walls could talk!
