Retrologist news alert: Fire guts historic San Francisco bar
The Double Play, a beloved baseball hangout, dated to 1909. The bar is a 'total loss.'
The Double Play Bar & Grill, a historic bar in the outer Mission District of San Francisco, was destroyed in a fire early Saturday.
The Double Play opened in 1909, its roots tied to the long-gone Seals Stadium that was once right across the street, and where the San Francisco Giants first played in the 1950s.
Indeed, there was over a century’s worth of baseball memorabilia and signed photos in that bar — and that’s all gone now.
The bar is a “total loss,” according to a fire department spokesman.
