What a bummer! When I was in the area last summer I recognized these signs thanks to your chronicles of the remaining Arby's ten-gallon signs, and I made a point to drive here to take some photos. I'm so glad I did!
Relatedly, I once stayed at the DoubleTree in Tarrytown in 2017 when the Rockefeller ranch in Sleepy Hollow was having a huge cattle auction, and I saw a LOT of cattle ranchers with their cowboy hats all over the hotel. One of them showed me the catalog of the cattle on offer, and it was really big considering this was a ranch in Sleepy Hollow, New York--not exactly where I would expect a huge cattle ranch, Rockefeller-owned or not!
I'm so happy you got to enjoy these signs and preserve them on your camera., But I'm even happier to hear you stayed at the DoubleTree! Back when it was the Tarrytown Hilton Inn, my father worked at the restaurant there, probably 1978 to 2005 or so. He was there for the DoubleTree transition and would bring home cookies every night as well! I did not know the Rockefellers had a cattle ranch in Sleepy Hollow, by the way. Mind. Blown.
The hotel is really lovely, particularly when it's not overrun by ranchers and their families (whose kids seem to not understand the concept of indoor voices). It gave me subtle Twin Peaks/The Great Northern Hotel vibes with both the building's design and the general decor, which was a nice break from the cinderblock sameness that is the typical chain hotel experience.
Such a lovely inn. They leaned into a Dutch Colonial meets woodsy midcentury modern vibe when they built it around 1960. No longer in the Hilton family, but still there -- haven't looked around to see how it's holding up.
Ohhhh I will be there JULY 2!
Yeah! I'm looking forward to meeting you!
LIKEWISE!!!!

Oh goodness. Love this so much. Brings back so many memories from my very first road trip tracing the old Route 66! Diners. Stuckey´s... all the things! https://millerandybeth.substack.com/p/what-is-it-about-road-trips
